It seems this answers part of the mystery:

[Toaster:/Volumes/TestUFS/fink/t] vasi$ find . -type d | wc -l
21

Now, the obvious question is "why the heck does du count directory entries on UFS but not HFS?" This happens with both Apple and GNU du.
