Thanks for the information. I didn't realize that Apple's gcc
defaulted to -fPIC. Has this always been the case or is it new to
gcc-4.0? Does the gnu gcc from our gcc4 default to -fPIC as well or
is this specific to Apple's branch of the compilers?
