They exist mostly to keep binary-compatibility with old apps linking
against previous shared libraries, and to provide binaries capable of
dumping to upgrade your database.

While they're capable of running concurrently and being installed
concurrently, supporting all of the ancillary stuff exponentially
increases the trouble of trying to maintain PostgreSQL packages.
