Ah, so they changed the kernel so that settings *can* be changed later? It used to be once you set the shm* values, they were stuck, so it had to be in sysctl.conf so they got set first.
No they didn't, and you are right. I should have tested myself instead of taking Neil's word for the fact that it didn't work. It does.
