One other piece of bad news I should tell you about: at the moment, g77 does not compile on intel. This means that opensource fortran programs which work with g77 but not with gfortran cannot be compiled on intel right now.

From some discussions I've had with more knowledgeble folks, it looks like it may be possible to get g77 to work, but it will probably involve considerable effort.
