By any chance do you have a /sw/lib/libapt-inst.3.dylib instead?  If
you're getting the package from webcvs you'd have gotten an old version.

No, there wasn't, but since I'm now using the new version without apt- ftparchive this is a moot point. :)

And the newest dpkg and apt seem to be working very well.
