Did it open an Aqua window?  And did you then open a new Terminal before 
running the fink commands?

If it's still not working try running "source /sw/bin/init.sh" 
first--which does the same thing. 

To get it to work for every shell session you may have to edit your 
shell startup script (.profile, .bash_profile, or whatever you're using) 
manually and insert that command there, if the pathsetup script isn't 
working for you.
