Sent, although I'm not sure it is very helpful.

If I download the source and build it manually the shebang line for  
the scripts in build/scripts-2.5 gets modified from "#!/usr/bin/env  
python" to the hardcoded path for whatever version of python I call  
"setup.py build" with.

This seems to be some distutils cleverness [1].
