I didn't say "off the deep end". What he does is still very valuable, but in a different way from before. In the long run, it will probably benefit all users of X11 on Macs, but the equation "xquartz = bugfix for Apple's X11" does no longer hold. True, but this goes also the other way: Installation to /opt means no more bug fix for the system X11. At runtime, there will be interferences.
