Hi,

the actual problem here are *build* dependencies most of the time. A lot of 
stuff pulls in insane amounts of dependencies just so that it can compile 
documentation of the given package, using LaTeX or DocBook... sometimees it 
even involves graphviz (for graphs) which then gets you an insane amount of 
extra packages...

Most of these can be removed again after building the package finished. Sadly, 
there is (AFAIK) currently no way to automatically do that. And of course if we 
were still offering pre-built packages, you would not have to install those in 
the first place. Unfortunately, we currently lack the resources (including 
manpower and time) to provide such pre-built packages.
