The problem is actually even more serious than that: On 10.6/64bit, not only is it impossible to build only xetex as 32bit, but it doesn't even work if one tries to build the whole texlive package as 32bit. The reason is that the texlive binaries link to some Fink-installed libraries like libexpat, libjpeg or libfreetype, and these are built as 64bit on Fink 10.6/64bit. One cannot link 32bit and 64bit binaries together.
