Well, the problem there isn't Perl [1], but rather Perl's LWP library,
which tries to install several helper programs for web interaction. The
easy & painless solution to this is, normally, to just say "no" when a LWP
upgrade asks if you want to install [or in this case, overwrite] the HEAD
command.
Part of the design of Fink requires it to be as non-interactive as
possible (setup questions can be okay, but otherwise you should be able to
leave it unattended while getting lunch or whatever), so I'm not sure if
you ever get to the point where the LWP [a/k/a libwww] installer asks
about adding those scripts, but so far I've never had a problem with
regard to Fink, Perl, and LWP.
On the other hand, upgrading Perl itself can be tricky. There are people
that have managed to get a more or less clean upgrade from the stock 5.6.0
to the semi-bugfixed 5.6.1, but I'm not one of them. If you're the patient
type, go ahead and keep waiting for a while: with luck the OSX10.2 upgrade
will have 5.6.1 by default, and even if it doesn't you should be able to
get your hands on 5.8.0 by then. That'll be the first major revision in
something like two years, and it's scheduled to be ready this spring.
Back on topic though, it doesn't look like the case sensitivity issue is
going to go away as long as we have HFS+ and UFS co-existing. Best idea
for now is probably to just be aware of what anything you install will try
to do -- fortunately for open source stuff this is an achievable task --
and do any necessary backups before possibly questionable installs. So far
I haven't been bitten by this, but I think all of us are likely to sooner
or later... :/
[1] No CAPS please, it's not really an acronym -- the "Pathologically
Eclectic Rubbish Lister" is kind of a joke that got out of hand.[2]
[2] So says the Oxford English Dictionary, citing Larry Wall! :)
Look it up on http://history.perl.org/ some time... :)
