So in summary, an 'echo <somecommand>' in .cshrc works, but the
'source init.csh' doesn't?

If so, then here are a couple more ideas:

1) Try moving your existing .cshrc out of the way and creating a new one.
2) check the permissions of /sw/bin/init.csh to see whether it allows
everybody to read it.
