I am also new, to Fink not UNIX ;-)  This issue has come up a few times.  As
you identify libxml2-shlibs is in unstable -- I do not know the history, but
normal a package would not make it into stable until its dependencies do to.

This is been noted a few times on the mailing list -- I guess I am a little
surprised Abiword has not been pulled out of stable.   I bet a search of the
archive or google will assist you in proceeding... if u r willing to play
with ~unstable~

The beauty of it is that Fink will install the GNOME pkgs when it needs them
to satisfy dependencies -- or I'm not understanding the question?
