Okay, I ran fink selfupdate-cvs, then ran fink update-all. When I first installed fink, I used dselect, but a few months ago I started using the fink system more & more because it seemed easier to get to the programs I wanted (which weren't available at that time as binaries). So for around 2 or 3 months now I've been using fink install pkg to put everything on my system. I mentioned how I end up with old copies of stuff in /sw/fink/dists/ and here's the output I'm getting: [localhost:~] brandonp% fink scanpackages sudo /sw/bin/fink scanpackages Password: Information about 1385 packages read in 16 seconds.
dpkg-scanpackages dists/local/main/binary-darwin-powerpc override | gzip >dists/local/main/binary-darwin-powerpc/Packages.gz dpkg-scanpackages dists/stable/main/binary-darwin-powerpc override | gzip >dists/stable/main/binary-darwin-powerpc/Packages.gz Wrote 0 entries to output Packages file. Wrote 155 entries to output Packages file. dpkg-scanpackages dists/stable/crypto/binary-darwin-powerpc override | gzip >dists/stable/crypto/binary-darwin-powerpc/Packages.gz dpkg-scanpackages dists/local/bootstrap/binary-darwin-powerpc override | gzip dists/local/bootstrap/binary-darwin-powerpc/Packages.gz Wrote 6 entries to output Packages file. dpkg-scanpackages dists/unstable/main/binary-darwin-powerpc override | gzip dists/unstable/main/binary-darwin-powerpc/Packages.gz Wrote 0 entries to output Packages file. ! Wrote 7 entries to output Packages file. This one section I've pulled from the above section means I've got an older file that wasn't removed if I understood what someone told me previously. They also said that the older .deb version can be removed without a problem (which I've been doing with no probs noted yet). ! Package xfree86-base (filename dists/unstable/main/binary-darwin- powerpc//x11-system/xfree86-base_4.2.0-6_darwin-powerpc.deb) is repeat; ignored that one and using data from dists/unstable/main/binary-darwin- powerpc//x11-system/xfree86-base_4.2.0-11_darwin-powerpc.deb ! Last time I ran fink scanpackages after update-all I had 8 of these occurences and the time before that a whopping 32! Now, I'll admit I only discovered the scanpackages command from an email someone sent (sorry, don't remember who right now) that was part of a solution/idea to troubleshoot a question about removing unneeded items to free up space. Now, I know there are times when we intend to have two versions of something, but this doesn't mean that I actually have 2 versions, right? I say that because the xfree stuff actually lives outside /sw in /usr/X11R6. So, maybe my question should be: What does this output really tell me?
