Hmmm.   These steps worked without a hitch, but I'm left with a 
distribution tree so slim I effectively cannot do anything.  After 
following those instructions, if I do `fink update-all', I get

    [auda:~] ron% sudo fink update-all
    Information about 116 packages read in 0 seconds.

    No packages to install.

And if I try to install a package like gimp, fink doesn't know about it.

I appreciate the fink project, but as an old Solaris hand with little 
experience on Macs, I'm lost.  Could anyone tell me how to configure 
fink so it will function as the FAQ and home page suggest?  I need to 
install several packages, like gimp, and ran first into the readline 
barrier with the normal instructions, and now into an apparently 
shrunken fink with these new instructions.  Thanks,
