Aha! I wasn't at my Mac when I sent the message, so I couldn't try it for myself. I tried it, and had the same problem--nedit died.
This may be another upstream problem, like the one which is described in the FAQ. I'll cc the maintainer, and maybe he'll know more about the situation.
