It looks like I have qt3.1.2-3 installed.

Actually the more recent version qt3-3.1.2-4 from unstable wouldn't help either. There is a patch that used to be in qt3 in 3.0.5-7, and when we had this discussion about scribus crashing some 6 weeks ago, I thought Ben Reed (CC'ed) had put this patch of qstring.cc back in. But apparently he didn't, or it disappeared by itself afterwards.

Anyway, if this is what I think it is, you cannot do much about it except waiting for a patched version of qt3 and/or Kmail.

Tell me this means something to someone. I installed kde 3.1.3 (from
source). I
had 3.1.2 before and things were fine. Then, I messed something up, got rid
of
fink, and reinstalled it. That's when I started getting the "bus error". It
didn't happen before. HELP ME PLEASE :-)

What version of qt3 do you have installed? This looks suspiciously like the bus error that was haunting me in scribus for quite some time.
