I'm thinking about scrapping FINK again and starting ALL OVER. If I do that,
what options in Fink do I need to set to ensure the "right" packages get
installed??? I want kmail, latex, and if possible, EVOLUTION. THat's why I
originally embarked on this journey. And, I have Apple's X11 beta server. How
is this different from what Fink installs (system-xfree86, etc)?
Thanks for all the help :-)

system-xfree86 is just a placeholder to let Fink know that you have Apple X11 or XFree86 installed. It really doesn't install anything special.
Let's look at the libbonoboui error before you start over: can you post from the final compiler statement ( that for bonobo-canvas-component.lo) until the end?
Also, there has been an update to qt3 posted, which should be accessible via anonymous CVS soon. You may be able to install this and rebuild kmail and get it working.
