Yes, I believe that I am doing things correctly:

[mac-88165] cmt % which emacs
/sw/bin/emacs
[mac-88165] cmt % ll /sw/bin/emacs
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 26 28 Nov 2002 /sw/bin/emacs -> /sw/etc/alternatives/emacs
[mac-88165] cmt % ll /sw/etc/alternatives/emacs
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 15 9 Nov 18:23 /sw/etc/alternatives/emacs -> /sw/bin/emacs20
[mac-88165] cmt % ll /sw/bin/emacs20
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 10 8 Nov 22:19 /sw/bin/emacs20 -> emacs-20.7
[mac-88165] cmt % ll /sw/bin/emacs-20.7
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 22017400 8 Nov 22:17 /sw/bin/emacs-20.7

I install fink under /sw. I do get the same behavior with /usr/bin/emacs.

Hi there,
I have been working with emacs compiled from fink under 10.2.8 using the Apple's x11 and wm. I upgraded to Panther this weekend and built from source both emacs 20 and 21. When I launch emacs from either a terminal or an xterm, it is launched ONLY in the window itself and not in its own window. However the DISPLAY variable is correctly set and xclock is launched correctly in a separate window.

Are you sure you are launching your newly-built emacs and not /usr/bin/emacs from OSX?
