And get all the same errors as before.

Could this be an environmental issue? Something to do with the environment in X11?

Here's a couple of ideas:

Have you ever used ethereal before on this computer? Set up gtk? Try moving your settings away and trying again. They're in ~/.gtk* and probably ~/.ethereal, look for other relevant dot-files.

If you can give us a backtrace, it might help. Just set DISPLAY and run 'gdb ethereal'. When the prompt comes up, type "run", then when it crashes type "bt". Post the output to the list.
