I installed from binaries, and a cursory search of the tarballs shows
that libXplugin is *not* included.
I will let my computer build its own binaries and see if that fixes the
problem. Google, though, keeps turning up this message:
This library exists solely to get the new extensions linked into the
Netscape Plug-in. Once vendors start shipping R7 versions of
libXext.so then there will be no need for this library.
so it seems that libXplugin is already somewhat obsolete.

Found it. :-) Thanks!
And/Or I will install Apple's X11 and see if that fixes the problem
(and/or breaks gtk2 apps; the breakage all revolves around rendering
text, and specifically in places like menus and check box labels).
Either way (or both ways), I'll summarize the results to the mailing
list.
