Sigh! sigh! Am I the only one having an awful time with Fink? I appreciate all the hard work of all the people involved in this important project. But out of 4 Macs I have only succeeded in getting it to work properly on two. And I have two iBook G4s and I got it to work properly on one and not on another (unfortunately the one that works is overseas so I cant do any comparisons).

So here is my problem. I recently bought an iBook G4 and installed latest version of Fink after installing X11 and the developer packages (all of them) which weren't on the computer. So I immediately ran into the problem I had on my eMac viz. no text showing in the gaim window (or in any other gtk application for that matter). I had given up on the eMac and chalked that up to upgrading from 10.2 to 10.3. (even thought I totally chucked Fink and the developer directory and reinstalled everythign from scratch). But I noticed that the libpango files weren't installed, so I installed them as well as the x-use-mac-fonts-package (whatever that is - I trashed fink again so I dont have list in front of me). Some progress. Gaim showed text for username and password although it didn't have any menus. So I said to myself I said, let's go for an unstable install (in any case gaim in binary is useless with Yahoo, and only the unstable version would work).

So I did rsync-update and source-install for gaim. Even though I installed teTex using i Installer, it insisted on installing teTex (i understand this may be a problem of my not installing some developer files). But worse, it insisted on install Xfree86-Darwin even though I have Apple X installed. Even though it said it wouldnt overwrite the X11 files, I still saw X11-Darwin in the application directory and X wouldnt work.

So I trashed everything, reinstalled X and developer packages (just in case Fink messed those up). I want to give Fink one more try (in fact I have to since xmms is the only app that I know that plays streaming oggs). I have to say that given that Abiwork and Lyx have now been ported native I have less of an incentive to fight the Fink demons. And gentoo Mac OS looks mighty interesting but its way too immature. So if someone can give me reasonable advice on how to move forward so i dont end up wasting more time, I would very much appreciate it. Thanks for hearing me out.
