Xfig makes extensive use of X resources. The default stuff is set in /sw/etc/app-defaults/Fig and .../Fig-color. You can modify these, but it is recommended to copy lines from there into your private ~/.Xresources file. For the help browser, you can put a line


Fig.browser: open %f

there. Restart X11 or run "xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources" after you changed this. I haven't looked at xmgrace, maybe it's similar. For xfig, this is explained (or, let's say, "mentioned") in the documentation.
