It would perhaps be useful to see some parts of your build log. In mine (which did install /sw/bin/xdpf successfully), I see for example the two lines

DarwinPorts reports similar problem on January 2nd, 2005 and seems to have something to do with the problem on scribus (wild guess).

mine said (with Apple's X11):
checking whether to use freetype2 library... (cached) /usr/X11R6/lib
checking where to find the freetype2 header files... (cached) /usr/X11R6/include/freetype2
... then same as Martin
