(snip) I saw basically the same problem. Look to see if you've got a customized xpdfrc, for example at ~/.xpdfrc . Oh!! Thank you! teTeX was apparently a complete red herring - I created the ~/.xpdfrc at about the same time. If you do, try removing it (or renaming it something else to test). All better.
