On my machine with 10.4.2, xcode 2.1, fink-0.24.8-21, following several attempts, I've apparently gotten openoffice installed; fink list -i gives the following (drastically editied for space):

I'm not sure what you were looking for piping the dpkg result to grep (& no, I'm not sure if I'm using the right syntax or grammar to describe what I'm trying to ask either). Here's some more info (items above & below the o's cut out to save lots o space):
