Thanks for the response. Sadly, I get no luck with that one either.
I think the applettf fonts are already seen by X:
Font Path:
/sw/lib/X11/fonts/applettf/,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/
I've removed all of those except applettf (needed because of verdana)
and misc (default xterm font), and I still get the pango error.

I hope this is not something resolved elsewhere. I've been searching
lists, groups, and webs for the past few days trying to figure it
out. I also went as far as wiping out my entire fink and all
packages (rm -fr /sw !) and reinstalling. (well, I needed to clean up
anyway). So to start with i can give you a pretty quick idea of the
installation:
fink install xfree86
(had to install that from apt-get later to install pango-xft2 because
a lib was missing)
fink install bundle-gnome
fink install mozilla
is about all I have one. Oh, and also applesystemfonts: gnome won't
run without it due to the Verdana font, which I tried to install
manaually to no avail. So if someone can show me how to do that,
perhaps the problem will be solved. ( tried /sw/lib/x11/fonts fondu
<veranda font>; mkfontscale mkfontdir, did nto work)
The problem is, any time gnome-font-properties gets invoked, the
invoking application crashes. The error message is:
** ERROR **: file pangofc-fontmap.c: line 481
(pango_fc_font_map_list_families): assertion failed: (res ==
FcResultMatch)
aborting...
The bigger problem is that there is a very annoying font, especially
annoying in gnome-terminal,that's the default.
Any help on this would be appreciated.
