No, it was from "/Users/paulinde/Documents"... and I tried from /sw/ as well, same problem...

On Tiger, this is even simpler, because it comes with tcl/tk aqua installed: Run

  env PATH=/usr/bin:$PATH xmaxima

That is even easier :-)
