Fink has the capability to run the CVS commands as a normal user.
That has some advantages - it uses that user's CVS settings files and
allows
the package descriptions to be edited and updated without becoming
root. Please specify the user login name that should be used: [brian]

full CVS access. Other users, just press return to set up anonymous

fink scanpackages

For future reference, "scanpackages" is 100% irrelevant for getting
_new_ packages. It basically exists to make the binary tools aware of
packages you've already built from source.
Thanks, I know. I included it only to show the errors it returned in
case that was useful information.
I really need to get my package list updated to install some packages
not available as binaries. Can anyone help?

rsync selfupdate worked for me (as I write this). Give it another
try.
I still doesn't work. I've been trying this for about a week now
with the same result everytime. I don't think this is some spurious
problem due to which mirrors I'm trying.
Can anyone tell me why I can't selfupdate?
