What's /sw/var/db supposed to be like?

$ ls -alF /sw/var/db
total 176
drwxr-xr-x   3 root  admin    102 24 Jan 23:11 ./
drwxr-xr-x  28 root  admin    952 25 Feb 00:19 ../
-rw-r--r--   1 root  admin  88942 24 Jan 23:09 finkapt.db

There should be the main fink database, some 20 megabytes long.

Usually it is called "fink.db" (see also "man fink"), and it is updated whenever you run "fink index" or "fink selfupdate" or some such command, except when you have the apt-ftparchive package installed. Then it is called "apt-ftparchive.db" and it is updated at each full moon or something like that.

Don't ask me about it; I have never understood this database stuff. I have no idea who writes there, fink, apt, or dpkg, and when and where and why (or why not in your case). Maybe we should petition fink-core to document some of it?

The "finkapt.db" was something that existed for a while in November 2004 when the --use-binary-dist stuff was first introduced. Why it is there in your case, and almost contemporary, I have no idea. Do you have an old fink version from cvs installed, perhaps? What version of fink do you have, in fact?

Then there are, depending on your fink version, also a couple of *.db files in /sw/var/lib/fink. And of course apt and dpkg have their own databases which could be missing or corrupt in your case.
