Gary, et. al.- An update. On the PPC machine, the keymap is again out of whack. Furthermore, the "formula" for replacing/correcting the xmodmap files no longer appears to work. When I get to the third step, run the gnome- settings-daemon, all I get is a series of complaints about not being able to start sound. The window which should allow me to choose .Xmodmap never appears.
I have repeated the steps several times. By the way, using exec gnome-session gives me moveable windows; exec gnome-panel locks them in (initially) at the uppermost left corner position. I share your pain. Fortunately, I can use Scribus, Gimp & Inkscape without invoking Gnome. Not as pretty, but it works.
