I would guess that what is going on is that you built ghostscript while
you were playing around with XQuartz-2.5.x, and the latter has a later
libX11.6.dylib than does XQuartz-2.4.0

I believe it's a powerPC-specific issue.  I got different visuals for
the same XQuartz version between my powerPC and my Intel box, with
Intel, of course, looking normal.

The safe things to do are:

1)  Upgrade back to X11-2.5.x.  Downgrading X11 always has been
problematic if you've built anything with a later version installed.

2)  See if you can rebuild ghostscript against your current X11.
