Many thanks. It works. It turned out that LC_CTYPE was set to "UTF-8"
by default in my installation of Leopard, and that seems to have caused
the problem. Setting it to "C" or something like "en_GB.UTF-8" makes
the fortune command print. Now I have put
----------------------------------------------------------------------
foreach i ( COLLATE CTYPE MESSAGES MONETARY NUMERIC TIME ALL )
unsetenv LC_${i}
end
setenv LANG "en_GB.UTF-8"
setenv LC_COLLATE "C"
----------------------------------------------------------------------
in my .tcshrc, so I get
----------------------------------------------------------------------
[pegasus:/Users/raghu]% locale
LANG="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE="C"
LC_CTYPE="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_MESSAGES="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_TIME="en_GB.UTF-8"
LC_ALL=
[pegasus:/Users/raghu]%
----------------------------------------------------------------------
and fortune prints as expected.
Regards,
Raghavendra.
