may be it would be a good idea to update the suggested link line mentioned on
the pgplot package page:

which thus should be changed from
-L/usr/X11R6/lib -lX11 -Wl,-framework -Wl,Foundation -lz -L/sw/lib -lpng
-laquaterm -L$PGPLOT_DIR -lpgplot -lcpgplot
into
-L/sw/lib -L/usr/X11R6/lib -lX11 -Wl,-framework -Wl,Foundation -lz -lpng
-laquaterm -L$PGPLOT_DIR -lpgplot -lcpgplot
as this is a potential source of problems.
