Yes, I know all that. I've only been using X11 for over a decade. And I was looking at my own xdvi, which has a menubar at the top of _its_ window. I couldn't tell from your description whether just the lower toolbar disappeared, or the toolbar and the menubar. Apparently it was the latter.
