DYLD_FALLBACK_LIBRARY_PATH does the trick -- thank you. I have been modifying DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH for many years after moving over from using Linux. Until now I had not encountered any problems of this sort with fink. The standard software in my field available for OS X also always modified DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH. So the existence of the different DYLD paths and their importance is new to me. Thanks again for bringing this to my attention.
