OK…that fixed it. I still get an error message, though:

[esc301238:~] jkolata1% gimp2
Dynamic session lookup supported but failed: launchd did not provide a socket
path, verify that org.finkproject.dbus-session.plist is loaded!
Dynamic session lookup supported but failed: launchd did not provide a socket

Not enough memory

I’m not sure it’s serious since the program seems to be running OK. Do I need
to do something more?

You don't have a version from unstable since there is no unstable tree
for 10.9. If you're on an rsync mirror which isn't updating (currently
only rsync://ber.de.eu.finkmirrors.net/finkinfo/ is updating ; and I've
tried contacting the admin for the master mirror to no avail as of yet),
then that would account for the versions that you are seeing.

re (1):

I do have a /sw/lib/pango-ft219/etc/pango/pango.modules, so the message
wasn't lying about where it wants pango.modules . Try installing the
base pango1-xft2-ft219 package if that isn't already installed.

re (2): All GTK+2 based packages will probably have this error, due to
the underlying issue in pango1.
