        Oops, i forgot about that.  I just renamed it and things are compiling 
again now.

        'older machines' presumably includes Core 2 Duo processors [this is a 
mid-2009 MacBook Pro]?

        This shipped with Snow Leopard, IIRC.  However at some point i swapped 
in a larger hard disk and installed from scratch, probably Mountain Lion.
