Instead of clicking and dragging within the list, try double clicking on each name,
and setting the group with the pull down menu.
It's rather tedious, but this exact situation happened to me, and this is how I was
able to resolve the problem.
(The rest of this message is completely unrelated to the original post.) Maybe this is
a good chance to address the issue of the list setup being less than intuitive.
Also, it would be nice if double clicking on the service icons in the buddy list would
automatically connect and disconnect you, instead of brining up the edit service panel.
