Was there ever any agreement as to what should be done about sending genuine
service status messages? What I mean by that is the problem that (in my case
on MSN) you appear to other users to be online and active until they
actually message you, when they get an autoreply informing them that you're
away. I've found this really pisses people off who have been assuming for
some time that I'm at my computer until they send an IM - if my buddy icon
in their client had shown away status, they could have called me earlier
etc. etc. Sometimes they even think I'm trying to be funny, sitting at my
computer typing 'I'm not at my computer right now' until they work out it's
automatic.

It seems a shame to lose such a useful piece of generic IM functionality.
