Thanks for the pointer. I have grabbed the latest source from libyahoo 
(http://sourceforge.net/projects/libyahoo/) and checked it in to CVS, 
which appears to allow a successful authentication, but we immediately 
get a message saying it's time to upgrade to a new client and still get 
disconnected.

As I understand it from looking at the libyahoo/gtkyahoo mailing lists, 
there have been some changes to the Yahoo Messenger protocol (to add 
features like typing notification for example) and they have dropped 
support for the old protocol.
