I fear I may have to write a full critique of this, for some elements are simply weird.
Interestingly, the introduction begins with “Guns figure prominently in the violent lives and deaths of women.” But in the summary, the following numbers are presented: Incidents 100% Hands, fists, feet 19% Weapons (all) 5% Guns 2% So the claim that “Guns figure prominently” is prima facie inepta. Interestingly, nearly 27,000 incidents of “violence” were of an uncategorized nature, though after their review of guns (all 2% of incidents) they noted acts of violence including “pushing and shoving, grabbing, pulling hair, slapping, punching, kicking, biting, stabbing, and strangling”, though they did not specially state that this was about 75% of all incidents. But the main weakness is the data comes from one city, Philly, which contends with some very interesting subculture issues. Social/cultural attitude differ vastly from region to region, so the study is a bit myopic. A quick search of the paper shows that the word “defense” (as in “self-defense”) never appears, so the threat/injury perspective is incomplete. It gets a bit stranger. In Table I (“Nature of Gun Involvement”) they include everything, including no involvement of a gun. To wit: Threatened in person (no gun shown) to shoot (17.7%) Threatened via phone/email/text to shoot (9.0%) Victim fearful because offender known to have or carry gun (5.7%) Just there during the incident/was carrying (4.2%) Gun stolen/taken in context of IPV incident (2.8%) Oddly, their conclusion section also states “Victims of IPV against whom a gun was used were less likely to have visible injuries, were far more likely to have been threatened, and were substantially more likely to be frightened.” The adage says “publish or perish”. Sometimes not publishing is the right approach.
