What I recall reading, although I don't remember exactly where, as I had
another purpose in reading when I did, were simple records of who had what
kind of weapon. One might find something like

A. Jones Musket, 50 rounds, horse.
T. Smith Firelock, 30 rounds, mule.
D. Taylor Long rifle, 60 rounds, wagon and ox.
S. Adams 3 inch cannon, 15 balls, wagon.
E. Johnson 4 kegs powder, 8 pounds lead, 2 barrels flour, 4 tents.

In other words, not registration of a particular weapon, but only a type and
amount of things a militia operation might need.

Can you imagine that a commander would not want to compile such an
inventory, even if he only kept it in his pocket?

Every regime? I don't think so. Gun registration did not exist in colonial
Massachusetts, at least as a mandatory matter. What would they record?
Detailed descriptions of the gun?
