What I recall reading, although I don't remember exactly where, as I had another purpose in reading when I did, were simple records of who had what kind of weapon. One might find something like
A. Jones Musket, 50 rounds, horse. T. Smith Firelock, 30 rounds, mule. D. Taylor Long rifle, 60 rounds, wagon and ox. S. Adams 3 inch cannon, 15 balls, wagon. E. Johnson 4 kegs powder, 8 pounds lead, 2 barrels flour, 4 tents.
In other words, not registration of a particular weapon, but only a type and amount of things a militia operation might need.
Can you imagine that a commander would not want to compile such an inventory, even if he only kept it in his pocket?
