In a time I've played with postgres 4Gb was typical HDD size...

Definitely. Luckily we are not going to create such tool.

PS. When it was needed once to store big blobs in SQL script, I've used 
blob concatenation to append data by 16K portions. Certainly, not 
efficient, but when one needs to transfer a few 3-10 Mb objects, acceptable.
