Firebug 1.8 is compatible with Nightly (I am using this combo every day), but the max version in releases is currently set to 5.0. You have two options:
1) Download the source from SVN and link from your runtime profile http://getfirebug.com/wiki/index.php/Firebug_Internals#Development_Setup 2) Get the latest release http://getfirebug.com/releases/firebug/1.8/ and change the max version in install.rdf (unzip XPI, change max version, zip again, install) I am thinking about to change the max number if 1.8 release to cover also Nightly so, the process for Nightly users is easier but need to discuss yet.
