Hi everyone,
I have some basic questions about setting up a firewall at home. I recently
got a cable modem from TCI @Home which I have plugged into a hub so that I
can access it from two different computers. Currently, I have 2 IP addresses
and I have to disable all file sharing on both machines in order to maintain
a reasonable level of security (otherwise, anyone on the same node of the
@Home network has access to my computers by browsing through the Windows
Network Neighborhood!).
I have an older computer that I would like to install Linux on and use it
as a firewall/proxy server. Primarily, I need to separate my internal
network from the rest of the world and keep the amateur "hackers" out.
There's nothing terribly important on my machines (mostly games and college
homework), so I'm not too concerned about being a target for serious
hackers. I just want to keep out the other @Home customers (who are
basically on the same subnet) so I can go back to sharing resources between
my computers.
I have looked at SOCKS and fwtk, but I'm not very familiar with either one.
I'm not looking for a complete walkthrough of how to configure everything,
just some pointers to get me going in the right direction before I get in
over my head.
Thank You
- Chris Ernst
