Subject: RES: Secure FTP?

Hello,

You can use de SSH itself to have a secure FTP (since the FTP
server and the SSH server are in the same machine). It is possible
through "port forward" feature of SSH. Actually you use both a
SSH client (to make a connection to SSH server using port forward)
and a FTP client (to make a connection in this specific forwarded port).

To make a secure FTP connection, follow:

1- Make a connection with the SSH server, using "port forward" feature.
Specify a port number that you will use to connect in with FTP client.
e.x. port 1500;

2- Make a connection with the FTP server (using your FTP client) in the
specified port (1500);

If you connect to the FTP server than all your data between you and the
server are secure because you are using the SSH secure channel,
therefore you are using all the secure features of SSH, specially strong
cryptography.

So first you make a SSH connection forwarding a port (1500). Then you
make a FTP connection in this forwarded port (1500). So you will "talk" in
a secure channel to this port (1500), and the SSH server will "talk" with
the
FTP server. While the SSH server and FTP server are in the same machine,
the communication between then are considered secure too.

The FTP server must be allowed to passive transfers to this tip work.

Eventually you can use it to make a secure POP connection, or even any other
protocol.
