how to set up a firewall

Hi :
        I need some from anyone of you. I have been under extremely heavy
cracker attack. I set up a firewall , but I am sure , after a few break
ins that is not working at all. Can anyone help out with this ? I am
getting really tired of this .
I would appreciate any comments about it.
