Just my two cents....

I recently installed Trend Micro's OfficeScan, ScanMail, and ServerProtect
products for my small (under 40 clients) NT network.

I must say that I am very impressed with Trend's centralized manageability.
There are actually so many options on how to manage the clients, it makes
your head spin <g>. You can do (completely) silent, remote installs on NT
clients, update virus patterns, and update the OfficeScan program files
themselves on the clients.. everything... all from a centralized location. I
am really pretty impressed :-)

However, I can't really compare the speed of virus pattern updates to other
vendors.. as I have only used Computer Associates' Inoculan software
previously, and that had one annoying bug - it would expire on all clients
and servers 3 months after install, so I just stopped using it.

Every bit of information counts !
We are also in a process to sort out a new antivirus
software. Because of
some historical reasons NAV is the prefered one, but I'm
still not
                convinced.
I would prefer Trendmicro. Why ?
                1. Reading through some Firewall tests the Antivirus
software which are
                recommended are Minesweeper and Trendmicro.
                2. Centralized Management ! Trendmicro has a pretty good web
interface to
manage all clients. NAV uses Microsoft Management Console
                3. Scaning e-mails. Trendmiro's product works pretty well,
whereby the NAV
product sometimes stops the system attendand service.
                What does speak for NAV?
                - Price, it's much more cheaper than Trendmicro
                - the virus pattern update is really quick. For example
regarding the last
virus explorer.zip worm, NAV was round about 2 hours earlier
than NAV.

I would be interested to hear some more comments!

Thanks to everyone for answering my questions ...

                A few things:

                1. NAV FW can be updated using the normal NT updater on
Symantec's
Web site. I ran both the one for 2.0 and the one for 4.0
and 5.0.
Both seemed to indicate failure, but the definitions were
updated
                   anyway.
                2. Out of curiosity, how is fault-tolerance handled with
FW-1? If the
CVP server is down, what does it do?
                3. It seems that NAV for FW hasn't been updated in a while.
I'll call
Symantec and find out what their strategy is, but I don't
know how
honest an answer I'll get, so if someone here has some
info, I'd
                   love to hear it.
                4. About anti-virus products in general -- it seems that
people like
Symantec for their ability to respond quickly to new
virus
threats. On the other hand, people do not like NAI
because it
takes a long time for them to post fixes. People also
like
Trend Micro and eSafe. I'm personally leaning away from
Norton
                   because of the following reasons:
                5. Norton does not log e-mail scans. For example, if you ask
Norton to strip .exe files, it doesn't log incidences of
this
happening. Also, it doesn't copy these files to
quarrantine,
which the documentation indicates it should. The stats
that
NAV shows are reset every time the service is restarted
--
there is now historical information. Also, LiveUpdate
can
only be scheduled to update every 3 days at the most,
which
is a problem when you have something like WormExplore.Zip
or Melissa, which can spread pretty quickly.

Currently, I'm leaning towards Trend Micro a firewall virus
solution.
But I'd like to hear from more people on what they've
chosen. I'm fully
aware that this is not a cure all, but every bit counts.

Sorry I didn't specify I wanted something that worked with
firewalls,
and not something that worked in conjunction with firewalls.
I kind of
figured that running both on the same server would be a
mistake.

                Thanks!

                Jen
